Despite the stress of her childhood, Brie Larson turned into a huge star. Fans know the actress for her role as Captain Marvel, however, she completely changed her career thanks to the film, Room, which won the actress an Oscar.
As it turns out, Larson tapped into some dark experiences for the role. Among them, was her troubled childhood alongside her dad. As we'll reveal in the following, Larson had a broken relationship with her father, so much so that when her visitation requirements ended, she refused to see her dad again.
We're going to take a closer look at their relationship, and what her father has to say about her acting career. We'll also reveal Larson's feeling towards her mother, and the stresses she underwent during her youth.
In 2016, Brie Larson took home an Oscar for her work in Room. According to the actress, she had to tap into some deep trauma, which included her mother trying to hold it together at a young age when she had separated from her father.
Larson recalls the moment, "I was reminded of my childhood when I was seven and my mom packed up our old Mercedes and we drove from Sacramento to Los Angeles, about six hours, because I wanted to be an actor. We moved into a studio, about twice the size of the room in Room."
She continues, "We had a bed that came out of the wall and we lived on noodles and had a couple of McDonald’s toys. I thought we were living the dream! But I remember being woken up by my mom sobbing, and it was only years later I realized that she also moved us out there because she was going through a divorce. She was struggling."
Larson would go on to reveal that she truly realized the difficulties of being a mom while shooting the film. "The movie became a way of forgiving myself for all I didn’t know as a child. I didn’t realize how hard it was to be a mom and keep it all together."
Once Larson's visitation rights ended with her father, things were never the same between the two. Larson had her reasons, while her father was always open to reconciling with his daughter.
During Larson's Oscar buzz back in 2016, the actress revealed she hadn't seen or spoken to her father in a decade. That might hold true today, given that there hasn't been any new word on their relationship.
According to Larson, her father seemed to be uninterested with the parenting life.
"When legally I didn't have to have visitation with him anymore, I jumped on it," she told the magazine. "As a kid I tried to understand him and understand the situation. But he didn't do himself any favors. I don't think he ever really wanted to be a parent. It wasn't until truly recently that I realized that's why so much of my work was so volatile."
Brie would go on to reveal that her upbringing certainly changed things for her, particularly in social situations.
"All of the stuff I wasn't dealing with in my actual life -- all of this anger, my fears and my vulnerabilities -- I didn't feel comfortable expressing because I felt like it was part of the human code that when we're out in the public space, everyone's perfect and good, and we're all nice women, and we dress well and we brush our hair and agree with these customs."
As for her father Sylvain Desaulnier, he doesn't want any wealth from his daughter, back in 2016 he just wanted to reconnect with her.
Daily Mail was able to catch up with Desaulnier back in 2016. According to his words with the publication, he is nothing but proud of his daughter and all that she had accomplished.
"I love her to death. It’s my daughter and I love her to death. I don’t want to say more. This is my daughter’s career. This is her life, this is her thing. I’m very proud of her."
Desaulnier would go on to reveal that he still kept a lot of photos and other stuff from Larson's youth. "I’ve got lots of things, lots of photographs from lots of time spent together," he added.
He also added that her performance in Room was fantastic, and that he had seen the film three times. Nonetheless, it doesn't seem as though Larson had a response.
