Anthony Pettis, born Anthony Paul Pettis is a mixed martial artist from the United States. He is currently signed on to the Ultimate Fighting Championship(UFC). He is a former UFC Lightweight Champion competing in the Lightweight division.

Anthony was the last WEC Lightweight Champion before the promotion was merged into the UFC. He was once ranked as a top ten pound for pound fighter. He is ranked number 8 in the official UFC Lightweight rankings as of 18th December of 2018. Pettis fights using the Taekwondo, Boxing, Muay Thai, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu styles.

Anthony made his pro-MMA debut in December of 2007. He recorded 8-0 in all fights that were held by Adam Sandoval and Duke Roufus. He debuted in the World Extreme Cagefighting(WEC) and won the Gladiator Fighting Series Lightweight Championship. Anthony has a professional kickboxing background. He is renowned for his smooth, technical fighting style in addition to his athletism. Prior to joining the WEC, he attended The Ultimate Fighter: United States vs. United Kingdom tryouts but he was unsuccessful.

Pettis made his WEC start during WEC 41, by defeating Mike Campbell through submission in the first via triangle choke. On the 19th of December 2009 at WEC 45, he suffered his first pro loss via split decision to Bart Palaszewski. On the 6th of March in 2010 at WEC 47, he earned a Knockout of the Night honours by defeating Danny Castillo via a head-kick knockout.

His next fight was against Alex Karalexis at WEC 48, he won the fight via second-round submission. He next fought on the 18th of August at WEC 50, he was up against Shane Roller where he emerged victoriously. He won the fight in the final seconds via triangle choke. This earned him a Submission of the Night bonus.

His last WEC fight was against Benson Henderson for the WEC Lightweight Championship. This was on the 16th of December at WEC 53 where Pettis won the fight in spectacular fashion via unanimous decision becoming the new Lightweight Champion. The fight was awarded the Fight of the Night title which earned both fighters an extra $10,000.

In October of 2010, WEC merged with the UFC and as a result, most fighters were transferred to the UFC. On the 4th of June, he made his UFC debut fighting against Clay Guida at The Ultimate Fighter 13 Finale. He lost the fight via unanimous decision.

On the 8th of October at UFC 136, he had his first victory in a match against Jeremy Stephens. He won the fight via split decision. He fought Joe Lauzon on the 25th of February in 2012 at UFC 144, winning the match via first-round KO.

On the 26th of January in 2013, at UFC on Fox 6, he faced Donald Cerrone. Pettis won the fight in the first round via TKO. This earned him a Knockout of the Night honours.

On the 31st of August at UFC 163, he fought Benson Henderson for the lightweight championship. He defeated Henderson for the second time, this time submitting him to an armbar in the first round. This earned him his first Submission of the Night bonus in the UFC.

Anthony fought opposite Ultimate Fighter Season 20 coach, Gilbert Melendez on the 6th of December, 2014 at UFC 181. He defeated Melendez via guillotine choke in the second round. He became the first person ever to finish Melendez. The fight earned him a Performance of the Night bonus award.

On the 14th of March at UFC 185, he came up against Rafael Dos Anjos. He lost the fight via unanimous decision. On the 17th of January in 2016 at UFC Fight Night 81. He lost the fight via split decision. On the 23rd of April, at UFC 197, he faced Edson Barboza. He lost the fight via unanimous decision.

After a three-match losing streak, he announced he would drop to the featherweight division for his next fight. On the 27th of August, at UFC on Fox 21, he fought and won against Charles Oliveira. He won the fight via a third-round guillotine choke.

On the 10th of December, at UFC 206, he fought Max Holloway for the interim UFC Featherweight Championship. He was three pounds over the 145-pound limit coming into the fight. As a result, 20% of his purse went to Holloway as a fine. He lost the fight via a third-round TKO.

On the 8th of July in 2017, at UFC 213, he fought and won against Jim Miller in the lightweight division. He won via unanimous decision.

On the 11th of November at UFC Fight Night 120, he fought and lost against Dustin Poirier. He lost after he tapped out due to a broken rib. The fight earned both fighters the Fight of the Night bonus award. He fought against Michael Chiesa at UFC 229 where he won the fight via a second-round triangle armbar submission.

This earned him a Performance of the Night award. On the 6th of October in 2018, he faced Tony Ferguson at UFC 229. He lost the fight via TKO and suffered a broken hand for his troubles. The fight earned him the Fight of the Night award.

It was announced on the 19th of January in 2019 that he would return to welterweight to face Stephen Thompson. The match is scheduled as the main event for UFC on ESPN+ 6 and will take place on the 23rd of March.
